How to Landscape a Hill

Landscaping Tips for Your Hillside

Don't let a hill in your yard keep you from creating an amazing outdoor space. With the right landscape design, you can transform a hillside into the focal point of your backyard.

Here are some tips for landscaping a hill to make it look beautiful and inviting:

Planting Plants on a Hill

Ground cover plants are a great option for hillsides. These low-growing species spread quickly, making them ideal for hill landscaping. They can often survive in difficult conditions such as rocky soil or little water and form an attractive carpet of color over the landscape. Types of ground cover plants that thrive in Pittsburgh include Ferns, Pachysandra, and Ajuga.

If you're looking for a more dramatic effect, consider using native flowering plants such as Black-Eyed Susan, Coreopsis, or Wild Bergamot to add pops of color. Other plants such as shrubs, prairie plants such as coneflower, and ornamental grasses such as tufted hair grass are also great for hillside landscaping.

Leveling Your Yard

If you want to level out your yard, hire J Bird's Landscaping to excavate or do land grading. When doing this, it's important to be aware of your soil conditions and any underground utility lines that may be present. While it may be tempting to do it yourself, it is highly recommended to have an experienced contractor come out and help you with the project so you can get the best results.

Creating flat outdoor areas on a hill can be tricky, but with the right design and J Bird's Landscaping on the job, it can be done. By installing retaining walls or terraces, you can create level spots in your yard for sitting areas and playgrounds. You can also use these level spaces to install a patio, BBQ station, sitting area, and more!
